Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Francisco 49ers vs Indianapolis Colts

The San Francesco 49’ers will travel to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday afternoon to take on the Indianapolis Colts beginning at 4:30 pm EST.  The 49’ers are coming off a 16-13 loss to the Houston Texans on 8-18-2018 to where they would miss out on the spread (-3) while the under was the play with the total being 42.5 for the game.  The Colts would lose to the Baltimore Ravens in their week 2 showdown at home by a 20-19 score to where they would cash out on the spread as 2-point underdogs while the under was the play with the total being set at 43 points for the game.  This game will pit the number one ranked offense in the preseason, the 49’ers, who are averaging 422 yards per game against the Colts defense who are allowing 195 yards per game (1st).  San Francisco’s defense is middle of the road at this point of the season as they are allowing 331 yards per game (18th) while allowing 19 ppg (12th).  On the hand, the Colts offense is averaging 265 yards per game (29th) while putting up 19 ppg (17th).  This game will be interesting in that you have a surging 49’ers team visiting a Colts team that is attempting to regain their form from a couple years ago when they were a force to be reckoned with within the league.

San Francisco 49ers's Latest Performance :

Vyncint Smith would catch a 42-yard pass from Joe Webb to hand the Niners their first preseason loss on 8-18-2018 with :42 seconds remaining as the Texans would pick up their first victory of the year.  The defense for the Niners would allow 19 first downs while also allowing them to rack up 73 yards on the ground while also obtaining 250 yards passing to the Texans in week 2.  Emmanuel Mosley, however, would spark the defense by having a pick while Reuben Foster would lead the defense with 4 tackles.  Sheldon Day and Fred Warner would each have 3 tackles apiece in the win.  The Niners D would also hold the Texans to 50% efficiency in the red zone for the contest.

The offense would collect 17 first downs while also having 84 yards rushing along with 305 yards passing for the night.  Jimmy Garoppolo would go 10/12 for 136 yards, TD, INT while Nick Mullins would end 6/7 for 87 yards passing and an INT.  CJ Beathard was also 10/17 for 82 yards for the Niners in the loss.  Jeremy McNichols would pace the rushing attack as he would get 28 yards on 10 rushes while Marquise Goodwin would have 3 catches for 61 yards to lead the receiving corps.  Victor Bolden Jr would also have 1 catch for 32 yards while Dante Pettis would have 2 catches for a total of 32 yards.  The Offense for San Fran would go 2-4 inside the red zone against the Texans in this matchup.

Indianapolis Colts 's Latest Performance :

A Phillip Walker strike to Zach Pascal would put the Colts down only 1 point with 2:24 remaining in the game in their 20-19 loss at home to the Ravens.  Nonetheless, they were not able to retrieve the football again as they would drop their 1st game of the preseason in heartbreaking fashion.  There were some bright points in this game for Indy, however, with one being their defense which allowed 21 first downs to the Ravens along with 139 rush yards and 127 yards in the air.  The Ravens would also finish the game with a 100% efficiency in the red zone (2-2).  While this may seem a bit mediocre, what stood out to me was that the Colts defense also forced 3 fumbles for the night, to which 2 of them were recovered by the defense.  Hasaan Rideway continued his stellar play with 2 sacks while John Simon would also record a sack for the night.  Zaire Franklin (8 tackles) and Darius Leonard (6 tackles) would also lead the defensive charge for the Colts in the loss.  George Odum and Grover Stewart would also chip in 4 tackles apiece for what was an active defense all night.

The offense was able to record only 15 first downs while collecting 69 yards rushing along with 215 yards passing total in the loss.   They were also 2-4 from within the red zone for the game while also having 2 fumbles (1 lost).  Jacoby Brissett would once again, get most of the snaps as he would end 14/23 for 172 yards while Andrew Luck would go 6/13 for 50 yards and an INT.  Walker would also go 2/4 for 26 yards, TD, and INT for Indy.  Jordan Wilkins would lead the rushing attack with 7 rushes for 26 yards total while Christian Michael would rush 7 times for 21 yards.  Steve Ismael would lead the receiving corps with 2 catches for 52 yards while Chester Rodgers and Jack Doyle would combine for 4 catches for 68 yards total in the loss for the Colts.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both teams will have a much better look as to where their team stands at this point in the season as the Colts will certainly be looking to square off against the Niners on Saturday.  Also, both are coming off slim defeats, which means that they will be clawing extra hard in which to maintain their focus throughout 4 quarters in which to get a victory.  Expect the Colts to hold Luck to a minimum number of snaps, however, Brissett has played well this preseason and will certainly be looking forward to facing this leaky Niners D.  The Colts D, on the other hand, is potentially a dominant bunch that will be seeking to apply pressure to a pass happy offense for San Fran with numerous playmakers.  In all, expect this matchup to be a defensive minded affair where teams will have to work hard for every break they receive.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Indianapolis Colts -1.5

My reason for the pick :

The Colts D, as I have stated recently, looks to be for real, thus far.  They not only boast the top ranked defense in the league, but, they are going up against the top ranked offense in the league in the Niners.  The Texans defense really neutralized the offense of the 49’ers last week.  With that being said, the Colts look to improve upon their defensive line play along with the play of their secondary in which to obtain another preseason win.  It is for this reason that I feel as if the Colts will have just a little bit more juice in the tank in which to finish this contest out strong to get a win.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under 42.5

My reason for the prediction :

Again, I do not see the Niners scoring many points in this matchup.  Secondly, with the Colts offense having some work to do before they proclaim themselves as being ‘back’ as a contender in the league, I really do not expect much from the home team’s offense as well.  So, with two up and coming defenses on center stage, I will back the under in this matchup as both will be looking to establish themselves even more as the season progresses.
