Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Francisco 49ers vs Minnesota Vikings

The San Francisco will travel to US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Sunday afternoon for a 1pm week 1 NFL regular season showdown with the Minnesota Vikings.  The Niners were only happy to end their preseason as they would go 1-3 during this time while losing their last 3 games by a total of 8 points total.  Nonetheless, they seek to play with their full array of stars in week 1 which should certainly provide a lift for a team desperately looking to some consistency on the offensive side of the ball, particularly.  The Vikings would go 3-1 during the preseason and will certainly love to continue their success entering the regular season in which to gain even more momentum moving forward.  They would pick up a 13-3 win over the Tennessee Titans on 8-30-2018 to where they would cash in on the spread as underdogs (+1.5) while the under was the play with the total being set at 36 points for the game.  The Niners, on the other hand, would suffer the 23-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on 8-30-2018 to where they would cash in on the spread as well (+3) while the over was the play with the total being set at 35 points.  The last time these two teams squared off was on 9-14-2015 when the Niners would get the 20-3 home win while cashing in on the spread (+2) with the under being the play at 41.5 points, total.

San Francisco 49ers's Latest Performance :

The Niners would lose a heartbreaker at home to the Niners on 8-30-2018 as they would suffered a 23-21 loss.  A Jeremy Nichols 6-yard TD run late in the 4th quarter seemed to seal the win for San Fran, however, their defense could not hold as the Chargers were able to go on a drive in which to allow Roberto Aguayo to kick a 26-yarder to get the win.  For the game, the Niners would pick up 18 first downs on 93 yards rushing along with 118 yards passing in the game.  They would also have 3 fumbles to which 2 were lost to the Chargers.  In all, they would hold the ball for 31:05 minutes while going 3 for 4 inside the red zone for the night.  Nick Mullins would go 10 for 17 at QB for 106 yards while Jack Henigan would go 8 of 9 for 58 yards.  Mullins and Henigan would also rush 5 times combined for 36 yards, total, with Mullins scoring a TD.  Jeremy Nichols would end with 27 yards on 8 carries and a TD with Jeffrey Wilson racking up 17 yards on 9 caries with a TD.  Ritchie James (7 rec, 80 yds) and Ross Dwelly (3 rec, 39 yds) would pace the receiving corps for the Niners in the loss.

The Defense would allow only 14 first downs to the Chargers, yet, the road team would obtain 138 yards on the ground along with just 54 yards passing.  They would also go 2 of 5 inside the red zone while holding the ball for 28:55 minutes for the game.  Julian Taylor, Will Sutton, and Ronald Blair II would each record a sack in the contest while Antione Exum JR would lead the team in tackles with 7 for the game.  Elijah Lee (5 tackles) and Pita Taumoepenu (3 tackles) would also make big plays for the D.

Minnesota Vikings's Latest Performance :

The Vikings defense would hold the Titans offense scoreless for 3 straight quarters after allowing just 3 points in the first while allowing them to rack up 11 first downs on 74 yards rushing along with 90 yards passing for the game.  The Titans would only go 0 for 1 in the red zone while holding the ball for 26:39 minutes.  Jaylen Holmes, Garrett Dooley, and Stephen Weatherly would all obtain a sack in the contest while Eric Wilson would have 5 tackles in the contest for Minnesota.  Holton Hill (5 tackles) along with Jayron Kearse (3 tackles) would also pace the defensive unit in the contest.

The offense would gain only 16 first downs while obtaining 96 yards on the ground next to 171 yards in the air for the game.  Kyle Slotter would shine at QB for the Viks as he would throw for 170 yards and a TD on 11 for 15 attempts while Trevor Siemien would go 6 for 11 for 55 yards.  Peter Pujals would also get some time under center as he would go 1 for 1 with 8 yards, total.  Mike Boone (56 yards, 18 rushes) would pace the running attack while Kobe McCray would also rush for 18 yards on 9 attempts.  Brandon Zylstra (4 rec, 54 yds, TD) and Mike Boone (2 rec, 54 yds) would lead the receiving corps in the win for the Vikings while Blake Bell would also have 4 catches for 32 yards.  Minnesota would go 0 for 2 inside the red zone, however, would hold the ball for 33:21 minutes in the game.  They would also have 2 fumbles (1 lost) in this matchup.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Here you have the Niners beginning the season on the road against a Minnesota team looking to stake their claim as a contender in their division in front of their home faithful.  I expect this to be a competitive and interesting game since the headliner will be the 49er offense with Garropolo against the highly-touted (mainly by me) Minnesota defense.  Both teams will look to win the battle up front while attempting to crank up their offensive production, however,  that will not be an easy task with both defenses playing aggressive and stingy defense at the moment.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Minnesota Vikings -6

My reason for the pick :

I happen to feel that this will be a coming out party for the Vikings defense, as I have been eyeing them all preseason.  With that being said, the Niners are a team that continues to gel with each week that passes.  Their defense has fought valiantly against their opposition for the past few weeks while their offense continues to work out the kinks in the meantime.  The problem is that the Vikings defense is very dangerous this season with a stout defensive line along with experience at the LB position.  In all, I expect the home team to score some points against the Niners in this matchup, thus allowing them to cover the 6 in week 1 for a big victory.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 46

My reason for the prediction :

Minnesota’s resurgent defense will be on full display in this contest as they will serve to neutralize a Niner offense that began the preseason in a promising way, yet, fell by the wayside in their following 3 games.  The great part for the road team is that their defense has been active and keeping games close, as I also expect them to do in this matchup.  The Vikings offense, on the other hand, has not been explosive in the preseason, however, they will score some points against the Niners, thus allowing them to cover 6 points at home in week 1.  However, the total will not surpass 46 points in this contest on Sunday.
