Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

San Francisco 49’ers vs Los Angeles Chargers

The San Francisco 49’ers will travel to LA Memorial Coliseum to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in week four NFL action beginning at 4:25 pm EST.  The Chargers fell to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday by a 35-23 score while the 49’ers also lost on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs by a 38-27 score in week three.  The last time these two teams met dates to December 20, 2014 as the Chargers picked up the 38-35 win in a high scoring affair as they would cover the spread as 1.5 road underdogs while the over was the play with the total being set at 40.5 points for the game.

San Francisco 49’ers's Latest Performance :

The 49’ers would not fare much better in week three as they fell hard on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs as they would allow 314 passing yards to Pat Mahomes who would also throw three TD passes in a 38-27 win.  The 10th ranked rushing defense for the Niners would only allow 77 rushing yards, however, as their defense also collected four sacks for the game.  The bad news is that their QB Jimmy Garoppolo was lost for the season with a knee injury, thus having the potential to send the offense into a tailspin.  Nonetheless, the rushing game collected 178 yards on the ground versus the Chiefs with Matt Breida leading the charge with 90 rushes on 10 carries while George Kittle led the receiving corps with 79 yards on five catches for the game.  Even with Garoppolo, the 49’ers would struggle as their passing game ranked 24th in the league in averaging 207 yards per game while its 2nd ranked rushing attack will now become its bread and butter as it has held the Niners afloat in averaging 153 yards per contest.  The unfortunate thing is that Breida is questionable for Sunday’s game also with a knee injury.

Los Angeles Chargers's Latest Performance :

Phillip Rivers and Melvin Gordon kept the Chargers in the game in the first half versus the Rams last Sunday, yet the Chargers would go into the half down by a 21-13 score.  Nonetheless, the Chargers defense would be scorched by Jared Goff as he would throw two touchdown passes in the second half and despite another touchdown pass by Rivers, the Rams would outlast the Chargers to pick up the win in week three.  The Chargers had a great day on the ground with 141 yards rushing led by Melvin Gordon with 80 yards on 15 rushes and a TD while Rivers would end the game with 226 yards along with two touchdown tosses in the loss.  Mike Williams led the receiving corps with 81 yards on four catches and two touchdowns for the Chargers.  The offense would allow two sacks and a fumble while also holding the football for only 25;44 minutes for the game.  The 24th ranked Chargers rush defense would allow 171 rushing yards to the Rams on this day while its 26th ranked pass defense would allow Goff 354 yards in the air with 3 TD’s and an interception in the contest. 8

How San Francisco 49’ers & Los Angeles Chargers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

San Francisco is 0-3 ATS while the O/U is 2-1

Los Angeles is 1-2 ATS while the O/U is 3-0

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Niners season seems to be all but over at this point.  CJ Beathard is the best option at this point, however, he will have to be thrown into the fire this Sunday versus a Chargers defense that, fortunately for him, has not defended very well versus the pass or the run.  The Niners will, however, have their running game, albeit, they may be without their leading rusher in Matt Breida due to a knee injury, as stated.  The Chargers, on the other hand, can indeed score some points with Rivers at the helm and are ranked in the top 10 in each offensive category.  With that being the case, they will look to exploit the defense for San Francisco that cannot seem to stop anyone as they are allowing 30 point per game to their opponents.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Los Angeles Chargers -10.5

My reason for the pick :

With Garoppolo done for yet another season along with their star running back questionable for Sunday’s game, I will certainly back the Chargers along with their high-scoring offense to cover in this matchup this weekend.  And while the Chargers have not played very much defense thus far (ranked in bottom half of each defensive category), I expect them to have a decent day versus a Niners squad that is only averaging 24 points per game in 2018.  Expect this to decrease with their star QB not being in the lineup.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 47

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, I expect Rivers and company to exploit a shaky defense for the Niners both in the pass and run in this contest.  The Chargers will also allow some scores early as well; However, will slowly take control of this game over time to get the win.  In all, I will back the over in this game with San Francisco allowing so many points to their opponents so early in the season.  And with the Chargers being 5th in the league in total yards per game with 414, expect them to move the ball at will while also allowing the score to balloon.
