Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New York Giants vs Carolina Panthers

The New York Giants will travel to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, to take on the Carolina Panthers in week five at 1 pm EST on Sunday afternoon.  The last time these two squads met was on December 20, 2015, as the Panthers picked up the 38-35 road win as the Panthers rushed for 171 yards total in the game while Cam Newton threw for 340 yards and five touchdown passes to get the win, despite a late Giants rally in the fourth quarter.  In all, the Panthers needed a Graham Gano 43-yard field goal to pull out the victory, yet Carolina was not able to cover the 5 points as road favorites.  The Panthers, however, had a week four bye, but, were victorious in week three as they picked up a 31-21 home win over the Cincinnati Bengals as Christian McCaffrey rushed for 184 yards on the ground on 28 rushing while Newton scored two rushing touchdowns along with throwing for two TD’s in the win.  The Giants, on the other hand, fell at home to the Saints in week four as the defense allowed Alvin Kamara to rush for 134 yards along with three TD’s in the 33-18 road victory.

New York Giants's Latest Performance :

With the hype surrounding Saquon Barkley continuing as expectations become more pronounced with every week that passes, the Saints would unleash their running back of the future onto a Giants defense that gave up a total of 170 yards to Alvin Kamara last Sunday as he scored three times in a 33-18 road win for the Saints. The defense also allowed a total of 397 total yards to the Saints, forty yards more than their current average per outing.  Barkely, on the other hand, only could respond with 44 yards on 19 carries yet scored on a one-yard run in the fourth to make the score 26-18 in favor of the road team.  The passing attack for the Giants put up 255 yards for the game with Eli Manning throwing a TD pass to Sterling Shepard to give the Giants a 7-0 lead in the first period.  There were not many offensive highlights for the home team after their early score as Manning was sacked three times while the offense fumbled twice in the game.  Tight end Evan Ingram did not play in this matchup as he continues to heal from an MCL strain he suffered in week three versus the Texans while cornerback Eli Apple and linebacker Olivier Vernon are suffering from groin along with ankle injuries for a Giants defense that find themselves 30th in the league in stopping the run while being 11th in pass defense in allowing 230.8 passing yards per game to their opponents.

Carolina Panthers's Latest Performance :

Cam Newton continues to be an effective duel threat at quarterback for Carolina in throwing for a total of 646 yards for the season while having three rushing touchdowns.  Christian McCaffrey is also a critical threat for the Panthers offense as he leads the team in rushing with 271 yards for the year while also collecting 157 yards receiving for an offense that is ranked first in rushing yards while also averaging 23.7 points per game.  Devin Funchess is one of Newton’s favorite targets on the outside as he has collected 185 yards for the season along with a TD catch.  Of course, the passing attack has left much to be desired as the Panthers are ranked in the lower half of the league in total pass yards per game at 25th with 203.7 yards per game.  However, they continue to be without tight end Greg Olson who is recovering from a foot injury, yet no timetable has been given as to his date of return.  On the other hand, their defense is ranked 9th in total points allowed with 20 while they are ranked 16th in total yards as they give up 357 yards per outing.  Nonetheless, linebacker Thomas Davis is set to return after their matchup with the Giants after serving suspension for PED’s.

How New York Giants & Carolina Panthers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Carolina is 2-1 ATS while the O/U is 2-1

New York is 1-3 ATS while the O/U is 1-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Giants find themselves losers of four of five to begin the season and desperately looking for a win.  And while Odell Beckham Jr is the headliner for the Giants receiving corps, he only collected seven catches for 60 yards in their loss to the Saints last Sunday while the Giants are 20th in the league in passing offense.  The rushing attack is even worse as they average 82 yards rushing on the season for a 28th rank, overall.  The Panthers, as stated, have been middle of the road on defense without linebacker Thomas Davis in the lineup, however, has done well in preventing teams from scoring this season in ranking in the top ten in points allowed with 20 per game.  Their offense is as dangerous as ever, however, with Newton and McCaffrey in the backfield as they will look to take advantage of a defense that is currently allowing 126 yards rushing per game.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Carolina Panthers -6

My reason for the pick :

With the way the Giants continue to struggle on the offensive end, I will most certainly back the Panthers at home in this matchup.  They are not only well rested and virtually healthy, but, are coming off a great home win versus an offensive minded team in the Bengals in week three.   The Giants, on the other hand, after seemingly gaining some momentum after beating a then win-less Houston Texans squad, regressed terribly at home as they showed no toughness at all within the trenches as the Saints rolled.  In all, look for the Panthers to continue their outstanding play versus New York on Sunday while also easily covering the six points as their defense will be looking to step up the pressure on an offense that seems to falter once this strategy is applied.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 44.5

My reason for the prediction :

I will pick the over in this contest as I feel as if Carolina will move the ball at will on the Giants, who are close to ranking last within the league in rushing yards allowed.  McCaffrey and Newton will consistently keep this defense for the Giants on their heels while racking up scores in the meantime.  Of course, Manning will find his receivers a bit more in Beckham Jr and company for some big gains in this contest while Barkley may indeed find the endzone a time of two to make the game interesting; However, look for the Panthers to prevail easily in what will be a high-scoring affair due primarily to the visitors reeling on the defensive end.
