Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Arizona Cardinals vs San Francisco 49’ers

The Arizona Cardinals will travel to Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, California, for an NFC West matchup versus the San Francisco 49’ers on Sunday afternoon at 4:25 pm EST.  The Cardinals lost at home by a 20-17 score at the hands of their division foe Seattle Seahawks as they would only put up seven points in the second half after going up 10-7 at the half.  The Niners also lost to the Chargers on the road by a 29-27 score in a heart-breaker as the Chargers kicked a 21-yard field goal by Caleb Sturgis to claim the victory with 7:21 left in the game.  The last time these two teams met was on November 5, 2017 as CJ Beathard threw for 294 yards and an interception while the Cardinals had 167 yards rushing for the game while also collecting five sacks on the Niners as the Cardinals picked up the 20-10 home win.

Arizona Cardinals's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Cardinals would play much more efficiently from an offensive standpoint last Sunday versus the Seahawks as they went two for three inside the red zone while improving upon their 31st rank in the league in rushing yards per game with 92 yards total as David Johnson led the way with 71 yards along with a rushing score in the loss.  Josh Rosen pulled the start at QB and would have 180 yards and a touchdown pass to Chad Williams that tied the score at 17 all in the fourth quarter before Sebastian Janikowski sealed the win for Seattle with a 48-yard field goal. The Cardinals’ defense ranks next to last in the NFL in rush yards allowed as they gave up 171 yards on the ground while its pass defense gave up 160 yards as Russell Wilson was 19 of 26 for the game.  They will now face a 49’ers defense that is middle of the road in total defense while ranking within the lower tier in the league in points allowed with 29.5 points per game.

San Francisco 49’ers 's Latest Performance :

The 49’ers came out focused in the first half of their matchup versus the Chargers as Antone Exum returned an interception 32 yards for the touchdown while Beathard threw a touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne to put them up early.  With a Robbie Gould field goal, San Francisco went up 17-6 before Phillip rivers hit Austin Ekeler in the end zone along with Caleb Sturgis nailing a 48 yarder to tie the game at the half.  Beathard and Gould tacked on a passing touchdown and another field goal in the second half, however, Sturgis once again, came through for Los Angeles with a 21-yard field goal midway through the fourth that would seal the victory.  Beathard ended with 298 yards along with two interceptions and two picks while the rushing game was able to collect only 76 yards for the game led by Matt Breida with 39 yards total.  The 12th ranked scoring offense for the Niners went one for four inside the red zone yet had help from the special teams throughout the game as they had 128 return yards.  Rivers threw for three touchdown passes while Melvin Gordon gashed the Niners 14th ranked rush defense for 104 yards.  San Francisco is dealing with injuries on each side of the ball as tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey are both day to day with shoulder and knee injuries while Marquise Goodwin (leg), Matt Breida (shoulder), and Beathard (lower body) are also day to day.  On the defensive end, lineman Solomon Thomas is also day to day with a shoulder injury and unsure if he will play versus the Cardinals while Exum is also injured and unsure of he will suit up versus the Cardinals.

How Arizona Cardinals & San Francisco 49’ers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Arizona is 1-3 ATS while the O/U is 3-1

San Francisco is 2-2 ATS while the O/U is 0-4

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

While the Niners have the much better defense, they are known to give up entirely too many big plays to their opponents.  This can certainly provide the Cardinals with a healthy amount of motivation for their upcoming division matchup on Sunday.  On the other hand, Arizona is ranked next to last in each offensive category thus far; Nonetheless, with Rosen in the lineup, their fortunes may indeed change in the weeks ahead.  The defense for Arizona had been decent thus far in the season, but, is ranked next to last in stopping the run.  This, of course, will not be good at all versus a team in the 49’ers that is ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game with 134 yards per game.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  San Francisco -4.5

My reason for the pick :

While Arizona may indeed play better from an offensive standpoint this weekend with Rosen in the lineup, I will back the Niners in this matchup due to Beathard’s performance versus the Chargers last Sunday.  Of course, San Francisco must be mindful of giving up big plays to the dismal offense for the Cardinals, however, they should really be able to take care of business versus Arizona as the team continues to struggle to find some type of stability at the quarterback position as well as along their defensive front that struggles to stop the run.  Again, the home team will indeed play well up front to neutralize the Cardinals’ running game while its offense will control the trenches while utilizing its rushing attack to grind out a win while covering the spread in week five.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 41

My reason for the prediction :

I will ride the under as this will be a matchup versus an Arizona team that is averaging less than 10 points per game while the Niners are ranked 14th in the league in putting up 25 points per outing.  Nonetheless, both teams have not been very efficient on offense, thus allowing me to expect that the under will be the play in the end.  Beathard is working his way into the offense while Rosen has just taken the reigns under center for Arizona.  With that being said, expect this to be a low-scoring affair as the home team will cover the spread, thus continuing to leave Arizona without a win for the season.
