Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Arizona Cardinals vs Minnesota Vikings
Two struggling teams that picked up wins in week five will square off on Sunday afternoon as the Arizona Cardinals will travel to US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to play the Minnesota Vikings at 1 pm EST. The Cardinals, as stated, picked up their first win of the season on the road versus the reeling San Francisco 49’ers by a 28-18 score as the defense collected five turnovers while Josh Rosen was solid in throwing for 170 yards and a score. The Vikings picked up their first win since week one when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on the road as Kirk Cousins threw for 301 yards and a score in the 23-21 win. These two teams played twice in 2014-15 as they each won outright in each matchup, yet, the Vikings covered the spread in both games with the last game being a 30-24 home win for Minnesota on November 20, 2016. The Cardinals are 0-3-1 ATS in the last four games versus Minnesota while the underdogs are 6-2-1 ATS int eh last nine games, overall, amongst these two teams.
Arizona Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Cardinals’ Josh Byrnes would put points on the board for the Arizona defense in their win versus the Niners while their rushing attack did the rest with David Johnson rushing for only 55 yards on 18 attempts yet scoring twice in the game. As stated, Josh Rosen also threw a touchdown pass in the contest to Christian Kirk who led the receiving corps with 85 yards on three receptions. And despite having only 10 first downs for the game, the Cardinals racked up 164 return yards along with going two for two inside the red zone to pick up the win. The defense for Arizona also gave up major return yardage to the Niners (300) however were able to collect four sacks for the game along with three fumbles. CJ Beathard ended with 249 yards along with two touchdowns and two picks in the loss for San Francisco. Nonetheless, the Cardinals have injury problems on their offensive line as Mike Iupati and Andre Smith both left their game versus the Niners with hamstring and shoulder injuries and are uncertain to play in this matchup. On the other hand, their defense continues to be hampered with the loss of Robert Nkemdiche and Markus Golden as the defensive tackle and defensive end are day to day with foot and knee injuries.
Minnesota Vikings's Latest Performance :
The Vikings overcame a two touchdowns day by Carson Wentz to shut down the Philly rushing attack and pick up a much-needed win last Sunday in a 23-21 road victory. And while the Vikings offense did not have a great day in the rushing department, Cousins made up for it as he had a solid night in hooking up with Adam Thielen for a touchdown pass that put the Vikings up 17-3 heading into halftime. Thielen ended the game with 116 yards on seven receptions while the rushing attack was led by Latavius Murray who had 42 yards on eleven carries. Minnesota’s defense limited Jay Ajayi to only 29 yards in the win while collecting three sacks and two fumbles, this being without defensive end Tashawn Bower who continues to be sidelined with an ankle injury. Cousins and company now turn their attention to an Arizona defense that has played much better recently in the defensive secondary while they are only allowing 22.4 points per game while the Vikings defense looks to exert their dominance over an Arizona offense that is ranked at or near the bottom in each major offensive category while rattling their rookie QB in the meantime.
How Arizona Cardinals & Minnesota Vikings Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Arizona is 3-2 ATS while the OU is 1-4
Minnesota is 3-2 ATS while the OU is 2-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will be a tough one to call with both teams garnering some much-needed momentum in their last loss. Cousins played very well in the last matchup for the Vikings while their defense impressed versus their opponents this season as well, despite allowing 26 points per game as a unit on the season. The Cardinals, on the other hand, has not impressed much on offense, however, their defense continues to be optimistic on the defensive end in getting turnovers that possibly lead to scoring opportunities. In all, this will be an intriguing matchup as one has to wonder how both teams will respond to a win.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Arizona Cardinals +10.5
My reason for the pick :
While it is true that the Vikings have caught some bad breaks in their past few outings, aside from their first two losses of the season in weeks one and two versus the Rams and the Redskins, the Cardinals have been in each game that they have played. Of course, with their inconsistency on offense, they were simply unable to gain the yardage needed to take advantage of their opportunities in which to pull out wins. Nonetheless, I will side with the road team in this game as their defense has performed well versus the pass which is exactly what the Vikings will attempt to utilize in order to get a win in this contest. Look for Arizona to slow this game down while giving Rosen and company a chance to seal yet another win for a Cardinals team that were looking as if they would go winless on the season just three weeks ago.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 43
My reason for the prediction :
This game will remain tight throughout its duration and with both offenses averaging around twenty points per game, look for the under to be the play. Again, Cousins has been solid, however, he has had to deal with a dismal rushing attack while attempting to also break in new receivers at the same time. Rosen on the other hand, is simply trying to learn the offense in real time, so, mistakes will certainly be made. In all, look for the defense to step up in this game as the total will not surpass the 43-point mark.
