Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Los Angeles Chargers vs Cleveland Browns
The Los Angeles Chargers will visit First Energy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, for a matchup with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 pm EST. The Chargers won their second straight game by beating up on the Oakland Raiders last Sunday by a 26-10 score as they went up at the half 17-3 en route to an easy victory. The Browns also picked up a 12-9 home win over the Baltimore Ravens as Baker Mayfield threw a key touchdown pass in the first half that proved to be the difference in the game as the Browns avenged a road loss at Oakland in week four. The last time these two teams met was on December 3, 2017 as the Chargers picked up the 19-10 home win to where the Browns covered the spread as 13.5-point underdogs while the total of 45 was not surpassed. The Chargers are 0-6 ATS in the last six meetings with the Chargers while the underdog is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings amongst these two teams.
Los Angeles Chargers's Latest Performance :
The Chargers cruised to victory over the dismal Raiders in their last time out as they took a 26-3 lead in the beginning for the fourth quarter as Phillip Rivers threw his second touchdown pass in the game to Virgil Green. For the day, Rivers had 339 yards with two touchdown tosses while the rushing game collected only 79 yards total as Melvin Gordon III led the attack with 58 yards along with a TD in the victory. Keenan Allen led the passing attack for Los Angeles once again with 90 yards on eight catches. And while Rivers and the offense performed solidly during the outing, the Chargers defense sealed the deal in collecting three sacks while also causing two turnovers for the game. Also, the Raiders were only one for three inside the red zone with only 14 first downs for the game while the rushing attack was only allowed 41 yards. Derek Carr had 268 yards for the game with a touchdown and an interception in the loss while Marshawn Lynch collected only 31 yards on nine carries as the Chargers 10th ranked rush defense stuffed Oakland’s rushing attack throughout the game. Tackle Russell Okung remains day to day with a groin injury and his status remains uncertain for this game.
Cleveland Browns's Latest Performance :
The Browns second ranked rushing attack pumped in 112 yards on the Ravens in their last outing while Baker Mayfield lit up their defensive secondary for 342 yards along with a touchdown and an interception. Mayfield was responsible for the only touchdown for the game as he connected with Rashard Higgins for a 19-yard pass to put the Browns up by a 6-3 score after a missed PAT. Greg Joseph kicked two additional field goals to seal the victory for the Browns who overcame five sacks along with two turnovers in the game to get the victory. The Browns defense collected two turnovers for the game yet their 22nd ranked rush defense allowed 122 yards on the ground to Baltimore while their 27th ranked passing attack gave up 294 yards to Joe Flacco, who also had an interception in the loss. The defense also collected two sacks while allowing the Ravens to come up empty in three trips in the red zone for the day. Cleveland’s passing game is averaging 231 yards per game yet will suffer due to Higgins suffering a sprained MCL versus the Ravens while their defense will likely be without James Burgess Jr who will likely not suit up for this matchup due to a leg injury.
How Los Angeles Chargers & Cleveland Browns Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Los Angeles is 2-3 ATS while the OU is 4-1
Cleveland is 4-1 ATS while the OU is 2-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
San Diego is on a roll and looks to continue their play versus a Browns team that has won two of their last three games with their two losses being by a combined six points. Also, the Browns are 1-1-1 at home this season as they tied the Steelers in week one while losing to the Jets 21-17 in week two. In all, the Browns have played well at home this year and will look to maintain this play at home versus a balanced Charger attack that is ranked 13th in both rushing and passing the football. This could possibly present problems for Cleveland in that they are ranked 22nd and 27th respectively in pass/run defense.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Los Angeles Chargers -1
My reason for the pick :
Though the trends suggest that the Browns have the inside tract in covering the small spread in this matchup, I will back the Chargers as Rivers continues to remain as accurate as ever on the field while leading the Chargers to two straight wins after going 1-2 in their first three games of the season. And while Cleveland’s Mayfield has performed well in his last outing, he has also had his moments recently were the Browns fans have covered their collective faces in shame. The Chargers seek to bottle up the second ranked rushing attack for the Browns that put up 145 yards per game while getting after Mayfield in the meantime. The problem for the Chargers is that their defensive secondary needs to bring their A game as they are allowing 281 yards per game to their opponents this year.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 44
My reason for the prediction :
I will back the over in this contest as the Chargers is not only a team that can score points, but, one where they will also give up points to their opponent as well. With that being the case, look for both teams to put some points on the board as Mayfield is seemingly turning the curb on his progression while Rivers consistently utilizes his weapons on offense in the most effective ways. In all, look for the total of 44 points to be surpassed as this will be a back and forth affair to where points will indeed be scored.
