Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Atlanta Falcons vs Washington Redskins

The Atlanta Falcons will travel to FedEx Field in Washington, D.C. for an NFC showdown with the Washington Redskins on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm EST.  The Falcons are coming off a bye week, yet, won their second straight game in their last time out in picking up a 23-20 home win over the reeling New York Giants on Monday, October 22nd to where they were in control for much of the game despite allowing two Giants touchdowns in the final period.  The Redskins were winners over the Giants in their last matchup as well by a 20-13 score at MetLife Stadium as Adrian Peterson racked up 149 yards and a TD in the win.  These teams last met on October 11, 2015 as the Falcons picked up the 25-19 home win in overtime as then-starter Kirk Cousins was picked off for the second time in the contest by Robert Alford for Atlanta as he would scamper into the endzone for a 59-yard touchdown to seal the exciting victory for Atlanta.  The road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six games versus these squads.

Atlanta Falcons's Latest Performance :

The Falcons are beginning to heat up on offense as they are putting up 30 or more points in four of their last six games despite going 3-3 during this time.  In fact, three of their four losses this season has come by six points or less, aside from their 41-17 road shellacking at Pittsburgh on October 7th.  Nonetheless, the Falcons have won two straight games to where the offense is averaging 28 points per game while Matt Ryan has thrown for four TD’s and no interceptions during this time including a 397-yard passing night along with a TD pass versus New York in their last time out.  Furthermore, Julio Jones finished with his second straight 100-yard game with 104 yards on nine receptions versus the Giants.

In all, Atlanta will look to translate their recent play into their next matchup versus a stingy defense in Washington that has stifled opponents this year.  The Falcons will certainly need to rely on their rushing attack, that ranks only 30th in the league with 83 yards on the ground per game, and Tevin Coleman (447 yards, 4 TD’s) in which to keep the defense from teeing off on Ryan throughout the game.  And while Atlanta has not played well on the road this year, they seek to reverse the trends as they have had success versus the Redskins in their last outing at FedEx Field.

Washington Redskins's Latest Performance :

The Redskins continued their winning ways as they picked up their third straight win as they punished the Giants on the ground in their last outing by utilizing Peterson while getting the 20-13 road win.  Alex Smith chipped in 178 yards and a TD in the win while Josh Doctson had 49 yards on five receptions for a Washington team that collected 360 yards on the day.  The defense held the Giants to 37 yards rushing while Eli Manning was sacked seven times while throwing two interceptions as the Giants racked up 102 yards in what was an ugly game for the home team.  Nonetheless, the win marked the third time in as many games that the Skins defense allowed 20 points or less to their opponents.

And while their offense has not been spectacular by any stretch, they have done just enough to keep teams at bay with their rushing attack that is 8th in the league in averaging 128 yards per game.  Atlanta’s defense is ranked near the bottom in the league in defense, yet their rush defense is ranked 19th overall in allowing 113 yards per game.  And while Washington has left much to be desired in the passing attack, expect them to test the Falcons pass secondary in this game as they seek to create even more space within the NFC East division from second place Philadelphia.

How Atlanta Falcons & Washington Redskins Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Atlanta is 2-5 ATS while the OU is 5-2

Washington is 4-2 ATS while the OU is 2-4

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This game will be a litmus test for both teams as the Redskins, who are currently on a high from winning three straight, will welcome the Falcons whose playmakers are beginning to get into the flow of the game much better than in recent weeks.  With that being said, look for both teams to look to control the trenches as Washington has found success with Peterson recently in blitzing the Giants for 149 yards in his last outing.  On the other hand, with the passing game for the Falcons being their bread and butter, they also look to utilize Coleman even more in this contest, however, it will not be easy as Washington has the 2nd ranked rush defense in the league.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Washington Redskins -1.5

My reason for the pick :

I will back the home team in this matchup in that the Falcons have played better lately, however, they have not reached their peak as of yet.  In other words, their rushing attack has not developed in such a way that it can effectively compliment the passing attack.  With teams stuffing the box in which to take away this area in which to make Atlanta a one-dimensional team, expect for the Redskins to do the same in this matchup, thus allowing for them to make this a low scoring affair which certainly plays in their favor.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 47.5

My reason for the prediction :

The under was the play in the last matchup amongst these two teams while also being the result in three of the last four home games for the Redskins as well (3-0 in last three outings).  Expect the Redskins to come in to this home game with momentum as well as incentive to get a win in which to stay atop the NFC East standings.  Also, they will  seek to continue their stellar winning streak primarily on the strength of their strong defensive play that has allowed just 15 points to their opponents during their winning streak.

Betting trends for Atlanta Falcons:

  • Over is 4-0 in Falcons last 4 games following an ATS loss.

  • Under is 6-1 in Falcons last 7 games following a straight up win.

  • Falcons are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.

Betting trends for Washington Redskins:

  • Under is 5-0 in Redskins last 5 vs. a team with a losing record.

  • Under is 4-0 in Redskins last 4 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.

  • Redskins are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
