Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Detroit Lions vs Chicago Bears

The struggling Detroit Lions will travel to Solider Field in Chicago, Illinois, to face the up and coming Chicago Bears on Sunday NFL action beginning at 1 pm EST.  The Bears are coming off a 41-9 shellacking of the lowly Buffalo Bills on Sunday as their defense capitalize off turnover after turnover from the Bills in what was a lopsided win for the road team.  On the other hand, the Lions lost their second straight game by being destroyed on the road by the Minnesota Vikings in their last time out as their offense could not get things going in racking up only a tad over 200 total yards for the game.  These two teams met last on December 16, 2017 as the Lions picked up the 20-10 home win while also covering as five-point favorites.  The under is 5-1 in the last six meetings amongst these teams at Solider Field.

Detroit Lions's Latest Performance :

Detroit has struggled mightily lately on both sides of the ball.  To make matters worse, their passing attack has struggled lately as Matthew Stafford has passed for only 200 or less yards in three of this last four outings.  Nonetheless, Stafford has six interceptions along with one pick during this time.  Their rushing attack only averages 2014 yards per game with Kerryon Johnson leading the pack with 503 yards for the season, however, he has only put up 70 yards or fewer in four of his last five games while having only one TD during this time.  They also found it difficult to move the ball versus a motivated Vikings squad in their last time out.

The Vikings held Stafford to only 199 yards passing for the game as he was sacked ten times in the contest.  Johnson only had 37 yards on 12 carries for the game.  Marvin Jones Jr led the receiving corps with 66 yards on six catches, however, the Lions could only score nine points in the game total.  This very concerning as the Lions relied on their scoring offense to assist the defense in picking up wins early in the season.  Nonetheless, during their two-game skid, the Lions are putting up only 13 points per game while the D is allowing 26 points.

Speaking of defense, the Lions held their own versus the Vikings in allowing Cousins just a TD throw on 164 yards passing awhile collecting an interception and a fumble in the outing.  Defensive breakdowns along with an inability of their offense to consistently move the ball was the culprit for this loss.  Furthermore, the Lions must indeed get better if they are to keep pace within the NFC North.

Chicago Bears's Latest Performance :

Chicago continues to find themselves atop the NFC North standings with Minnesota directly behind them.  One of the causes for their recent success has been their defense, which has allowed only 9.5 points per game in their last two outings.  And while their offense has struggled under Mitch Trubusky at times this year, he threw for only 135 yards, a TD, along with an interception in the Bears last blowout win versus the lowly Buffalo Bills.  The rushing attack was dismal as well in putting up only 64 yards, yet Jordan Howard had two touchdown rushes to lift the Bears over the top.

Nate Peterman was back under center for the Bills for this matchup yet only passed for 189 yards along with three interceptions, including a pick six.  The Chicago defense also recovered a fumble in the matchup while posting four sacks on the day.  This was a win that was certainly bought on the by the defense, however, a reeling Detroit team is coming to town looking to get their passing offense back on track and will certainly test the resolve of the Bears 12th ranked pass secondary.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Lions are reeling and in need of a win while Chicago has enjoyed the fruits of playing struggling teams as they beat up on both the Jets and the Bills in the last few weeks.  Nonetheless, look for this game to be more competitive as the Lions will look to build from their defensive performance versus Cousins and the Vikings while the Bears look to continue their streak of playing great defense on their opponents by limiting the opportunities for a struggling Detroit offense.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Chicago Bears -6.5

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Bears in this contest as the Lions continue to disappoint on offense.  Yes, they truly seemed to have lost their spark at a terrible time in the season.  The Bears, on the other hand, are beginning to pick up confidence after picking up two momentum building wins while their defense also continues to get better.  In all, look for the home team to beat up on Detroit as the Lions are not very effective on the road this year at 1-3 SU.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 45

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, the Lions defense did all they could to neutralize Cousins and company last weekend; However, the offense simply let them down once again as Stafford and the rushing game had another bad day at the office.  With Chicago’s offense playing the way they are, look for the Lions to continue to struggle while the bears will control the line of scrimmage while getting a low scoring victory in the end.
