Carolina Panthers vs Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions return home to Ford Field after 2 consecutive road games and they will take on the Carolina Panthers in an NFC clash, the opening kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM. Detroit is pinned at the bottom of the NFC North while the Panthers are fighting to stay in the Wild Card race.

Carolina Panthers's Latest Performance :

The Carolina Panthers are coming off an embarrassing loss on national TV as they got waxed on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers 52-21. The Panthers can’t afford to lose many games this season especially in a division like the NFC South and I am sure Ron Rivera has emphasized that to his crew. Cam Newton has been a major reason for the success of the Panthers this season but an early pick-6 and being sacked 5 different times rattled the veteran QB. Newton was able to complete 23 of his 39 passes for a total of 193 yards and 2 TDs but he was extremely limited on the ground in this matchup as he only was able to get loose for 10 yards on 2 carries. Newton has been responsible with the ball all season as he has only thrown 5 interceptions compared to 17 TDs but what has made him special is his ability to rush for 352 yards and 4 TDs. 2nd year RB Christian McCaffrey has been arguably one of the best RBs in the NFL as he had been a threat out of the backfield in both the run game and the passing game. McCaffery was able to compile 77 yards and a TD on the ground while also bringing down 5 catches for 61 yards and 2 TDs through the air. The former Stanford Cardinal has combined for 1018 scrimmage yards and 8 TDs which is one of the best marks in the NFL. The defense got shredded for the Panthers as they gave up 5 TD passes through the air as well as let 1 TD up on the ground. The newly signed safety for the Panthers Eric Reid made an impact in this game as he was able to record a team-high 9 tackles. The pressure for the Panthers was almost nonexistent as they let Big Ben sit in the pocket all night and shred the secondary which will need to be addressed moving forward.

Detroit Lions's Latest Performance :

The Detroit Lions play in a tough division as the NFC North has 3 teams who can all compete for a playoff spot at the end of the season but unfortunately, the Lions aren’t one of those teams under 1st-year coach Matt Patricia. The Lions dropped a recent road game against the Chicago Bears after their 12 straight points in the 4th quarter wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit. QB Matt Stafford struggled early against one of the better defenses in the NFL as he threw 2 interceptions but the former Georgia Bulldog was able to show why he’s making the big bucks as he finished with 274 yards and 2 TDs. Stafford hasn’t put up MVP type numbers like we have been used to this year but the 30-year-old has limited targets to throw to especially after the recent trade of Golden Tate. Stafford was able to hook up with his new favorite target in Kenny Golladay 6 different times for a total of 78 yards and a TD. Golladay has developed into the featured WR in this offense as he has compiled a team-high 601 yards and 4 TDs. The Lions have started to insert rookie RB Kerryon Johnson into the gameplan and he has performed well as a rusher and a pass catcher out of the backfield. Johnson led the team in rushing last week as he ran for 51 yards and a TD but he also contributed 38 yards and a TD through the air. Part of the problem for the Detroit defense last week is that they were unable to force any turnovers and they only recorded 1 sack on a young QB. LB Jarrad Davis has been the leader of the defense all year and he continued his solid season with a 6 tackle performance to extend his season total to 57.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Carolina ranks 9th in the NFL in team scoring as they score an average of 26.8 PPG while Detroit ranks 20th as they score an average of 22.4 PPG.

Carolina ranks 23rd in the NFL in team defense as they hold opponents to an average of 25.8 PPG while Detroit ranks 28th as they hold opponents to an average of 27.1 PPG.

Against The Spread Selection: Carolina Panthers -4

My reason for the pick :

The line is set low because the Carolina Panthers were embarrassed on national TV last week but that doesn’t take anything away from how good they have been before that game. Detroit brought in a defensive minded coach in Matt Patricia but he hasn’t done much for them as they still rank towards the bottom in the major statistical categories. Carolina will have their offense rolling as McCaffery will be a force on the ground and through the air and Greg Olsen will continue asserting his dominance as one of the better pass catching TEs in the league. Detroit doesn’t have enough firepower to hang with Carolina here.

Betting trends for Carolina Panthers:

  • Carolina is 2-0 ATS after a loss this season.
