Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Carolina Panthers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers return home to Raymond James Stadium for a 2nd consecutive week where they will take on the Carolina Panthers in an NFC South clash, the opening kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM. The Buccaneers got a much-needed win after dropping 4 straight games while Carolina has dropped 3 straight games.

Carolina Panthers's Latest Performance :

The Carolina Panthers looked like they were well on their way to making the playoffs after starting the season 6-2 but after stringing together a couple of losses as of late they now sit in a tight race down the stretch. The Panthers lost a heartbreaker last weekend at home against the Seahawks as they were downed on a game-winning FG. The Panthers QB Cam Newton has quietly been one of the best in the NFL and he showed us why against Seattle as he threw for 256 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 interception while adding in 63 yards on the ground. If this were any ordinary year Newton would be in the discussion of MVP as the 29-year-old has thrown for 2699 yards, 22 TDs, and 7 interceptions while adding 417 yards and 4 TDs on the ground. RB Christian McCaffrey has continued to put up big numbers in year 2 of his NFL career as he rushed for 125 yards and a TD while adding in 11 catches for 112 yards and a TD through the air. McCaffrey is the best RB in the NFL at the moment in terms of scrimmage yards as he has totaled 1365 yards and 10 TDs. Despite McCaffrey having a big game rookie D.J. Moore had a solid outing as he caught 8 balls for 91 yards. The defense has been shaky over the last few weeks as they have let opponents score over 30 points in 2 of their last 3 outings. LB Luke Kuechly had yet another stellar game as he racked up 12 tackles while Shaq Thompson and James Bradberry contributed a sack each.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers's Latest Performance :

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers put arguably their most complete performance together this past weekend as they beat up on the 49ers 27-9 behind an efficient offense and solid defensive effort. The Buccaneers have had a revolving door at the QB position all season long but the young Jameis Winston showed his potential against the 49ers as he threw for 312 yards and 2 TDs without contributing an interception. Winston has had big games in the past but he has been turnover prone as he has thrown 10 TDs compared to 11 interceptions in the 6 games he has appeared in. The ground game was limited in their outing against San Francisco as Peyton Barber was held to 47 yards and a TD on 18 carries but that has been the story of the Buccaneers all season long as they have only gained 717 yards from 3 different RBs. The air raid attack has benefited all of the playmakers on the Buccaneers as they have 5 different guys over 500 yards on the season. The Buccaneers big WR Mike Evans was able to crack the 1000-yard mark after he caught 6 passes for a total of 116 yards against the 49ers. Evans has been a 1000-yard WR for the Buccaneers ever since he entered the NFL back in 2014. The defense for the Buccaneers has not been good this season but they showed the ability to pucker up last week as they held the 49ers to 9 points. Jordan Whitehead had a solid outing from his safety spot as he racked up 11 tackles while Isaiah Johnson and Ryan Smith came down with interceptions.

Against The Spread Selection: Carolina Panthers -3.5

My reason for the pick :

The Panthers may have dropped 3 straight games but their last 2 have been decided by plays in the final minute of the game which tells me they are waiting to break through. Both teams have a strong offense but the Panthers defense is much better than what they have been putting on film as they are strong at all three levels of the unit. I expect the Panthers to mix up looks and bring pressure which should force the turnover-prone Jameis Winston into a couple of mistakes. The Buccaneers have their hands filled with Christan McCaffery and I don’t think they have the reinforcements to stop the RB. The Buccaneers are in a letdown type of game after winning a big game last weekend. Take the Panthers to break out of a small slump and win on the road.
