Philadelphia Eagles vs New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are set to play in their 1st playoff game of the 2018 postseason after receiving a 1st round bye and they will welcome in the Philadelphia Eagles at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the opening kickoff is slated for 4:40 PM. The New Orleans Saints are the #1 seed in the NFC after winning the South division while the Philadelphia Eagles claimed the 6th seed and won their Wild Card matchup against the Chicago Bears 16-15.

Philadelphia Eagles's Latest Performance :

The Philadelphia Eagles have been as hot as anyone in football over the last few weeks as they have won 4 straight games including their Wild Card win over the 3rd seeded Chicago Bears 16-15. QB Nick Foles has inherited the starting role during this streak and he has been stellar as he has a real grasp of the offensive scheme. Foles had a solid outing against the best defense in the NFL as he was able to complete 25 of his 40 pass attempts for a total of 266 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions. Foles started the final 4 games of the season for Carson Wentz and he ended the regular season with 1413 yards, 7 TDs, and 4 interceptions. The Eagles were unable to establish a ground game against the Bears as veteran Darren Sproles only racked up 21 yards on 13 carries while Wendall Smallwood only racked up 20 yards on 8 carries. The Eagles need to establish a ground game to keep opposing defenses honest and there best is to get rookie Josh Adams going. Adams was the Eagles top RB during the regular season as he was the long 500-yard rusher as he racked up 511 yards and 3 TDs. The revival of Foles in the starting lineup as allowed WR Alshon Jeffery to shine once again which we saw on display against the Bears as he had a team-high 82 yards on 6 receptions. The Eagles top target all season long has been TE Zach Ertz as he ended the regular season with 1163 yards and 8 TDs. The Eagles defense has been a much-improved unit that what we saw at the beginning of the season and they kept a fairly solid Bears offense in check. DB Rasul Douglas has played well down the stretch of the season and we saw him rack up a team-high 8 tackles while Michael Bennett and Timmy Jernigan contributed the two sacks of the game.

New Orleans Saints's Latest Performance :

The New Orleans Saints are set to play in their 2nd consecutive postseason after they were crowned champions of the NFC South as well as claimed the #1 seed which means the postseason runs through NOLA. The Saints had the 1st seed locked up before week 17 which is why they sat their starters against the Carolina Panthers which turned out to be a brutal loss for their backups 33-14. Sean Payton has one of the top offenses in the NFL as they have been able to attack teams down the field as well as rotate a two-headed monster at RB. QB Drew Brees is in contention for the MVP after he had a stellar season as he threw for 3992 yards, 32 TDs, and only 5 interceptions. RB Alvin Kamara has been the Saints top back as he has racked up 1592 scrimmage yards and 18 TDs but his backup Mark Ingram is just as good as an option as he has racked up 815 scrimmage yards and 7 TDs. The Saints don’t have as many big name WRs as some of the best offenses have but they have all played big roles for Drew Brees. WR Michael Thomas has been stellar for Drew Brees this season as he led the way with 1405 yards and 9 TDs while rookie WR Tre’Quan Smith has been a valuable asset with 427 yards and 5 TDs. The Saints defense has been great this season as they have played well especially in defending the ground game as they are the #1 rushing defense. LB Demario Davis has been a force in the middle of the defense as he has racked up a team-high 110 tackles while also contributing 5 sacks. The Saints have shown the ability to get after opposing teams QB with DE Cam Jordan as he contributed a team-high 12 sacks while Sheldon Rankins contributed 8 sacks.

My reason for the pick :

After watching this Eagles team under Nick Foles for the last 4 games I can’t get myself to bet against this team as they are playing inspired football under the 2017 Super Bowl MVP. The Eagles offense has obviously thrived with a new face under center but the young defense has fed off that energy and have played just as good as anyone in football. The Saints embarrassed the Eagles during the regular season but they have done that to a ton of teams this year. The Eagles have constantly mentioned that this is a revenge game for them which will cause them to pour their effort into this game while the Saints starters haven’t played in 3 weeks which may cause a rocky start. The Saints have a dynamic offense and they showed that throughout the season but when the Saints offense struggled it was because Drew Brees got pressured. The Eagles have the talent up front to get to the QB and it will be essential they do that if they want to keep their young secondary from getting destroyed. The Eagles have the talent to keep this game within a TD and I think this will be a who has the ball last game.
