Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Los Angeles Rams vs New England Patriots

The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams are set to play in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA, the opening kickoff is slated for 6:30 PM. New England was a guest in the Super Bowl last year where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles while Los Angeles has not been a member of the Super Bowl since 2001.

Los Angeles Rams's Latest Performance :

The Los Angeles Rams may have controversially got to the Super Bowl with a blatant missed PI call at the end of the game, but they are still worthy of being in the Super Bowl as they were able to beat the New Orleans Saints 26-23 in OT. QB Jared Goff turned it up late in the game as he was able to record 297 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception which makes him the youngest QB in the NFC to make the Super Bowl. Goff has played well in the playoffs this year as the former Cal Bears has thrown for 483 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception. The ground game has been as strong as ever with C.J. Anderson finding a revitalization in Los Angeles and we saw him take the majority of carries against the Saints. RB Todd Gurley is an MVP candidate but he was only held to 4 carries for 10 yards and a TD while C.J. Anderson rushed for 44 yards on 16 carries. This has been the trend throughout the playoffs though as C.J. Anderson enters this game with 39 carries for 167 yards while Todd Gurley has compiled 20 carries for 125 yards. Jared Goff’s favorite WR throughout the season has been Robert Woods but he was kept in check by the Saints as he only compiled 33 yards on 6 catches, but Brandin Cooks was able to set up in the absence of Woods and rack up a team-high 7 catches of 107 yards which makes him the top WR for the Rams with 172 yards on 11 catches. The Rams defense went down early but they put their foot in the door and played well in the 2nd half. LB Cory Littleton was an impact for the Rams as he was able to record a team-high 12 tackles while John Johnson had a big interception in OT to put the offense in prime position to score.

New England Patriots's Latest Performance :

The New England Patriots have once again overcome the critics and have made the Super Bowl after they beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the road in the AFC Championship 37-31 in OT. QB Tom Brady may be 41-years-old but he has been playing lights out for New England and we saw him have a solid game especially in the 1st half as he totaled 348 yards, 1 TDs, and 2 interceptions. Brady has had a fairly solid start to the playoffs as he enters this game with over 600 passing yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions in only 2 games of action. While the aerial attack has been great for New England it has been the ground attack that has won games for the Patriots as rookie Sony Michel has been the best RB in the NFL playoffs. Michel was able to once again run for 100+ yards as the former Georgia Bulldogs contributed 113 yards and 2 TDs, Michel comes into this game with over 242 yards and 5 TDs in only 2 playoff games. Brady was able to connect with his typical sources through the air as Julian Edelman had 7 receptions for 96 yards while Rob Gronkowski had 6 receptions for 79 yards. Edelman has played well for New England in the playoffs as he is the leading WR with 247 yards on 16 catches but Phillip Dorsett has been on the receiving end of both Tom Brady’s TD passes in the playoffs. Look for New England to get back to asserting RB James White in the passing game as he was held to only 4 catches against the Chiefs which well below his 15 receptions against the Chargers. The New England defense played well in the 1st half against the Chiefs as they shut the high-powered offense out, but they collapsed in the 4th quarter as they gave up 24 points. LB Kyle Van Noy was once again the top defender for the Patriots as he had a team-high 10 tackles while also contributing 2 sacks, Van Noy has totaled 14 sacks in the playoffs.

Against The Spread Selection: New England Patriots -3

My reason for the pick :

Can you really bet against Tom Brady? Because I can’t which is why I am hoping on this small spread before it climbs above a field goal. New England’s team is much different from years past with the main reason being that they have a really dangerous ground game which opens the passing lanes for Brady and the WRS. New England also has two weeks to prepare for the young Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams and that is the last thing an opposing team wants to do as Bill Belichick is one of the top coaches in NFL history. I expect New England to attack a weak Los Angeles secondary with Julian Edelman and how can you forget about the mismatch of Rob Gronkowski and James White out of the backfield. I think the emotions will get to the Rams who only have 4 guys who have played in a Super Bowl before while New England has been a guest for the past few years. Take the Pats to win and cover.

Betting trends for Los Angeles Rams:

  • Los Angeles is 5-6-1 ATS when playing teams outside the NFC West this season.

Betting trends for New England Patriots:

  • New England is 2-0 ATS with 1 week off.
