Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Boston Red Sox vs Seattle Mariners

Game 2 of a 4-game set between the visiting Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners will take place at SafeCo Field in Seattle, Washington, on Friday night at 10:10 pm EST.  The Red Sox were demoted to the number 2 spot within their respective division by the Yankees recently while the Mariners continue to occupy the top spot within the competitive AL West division.  This will be the first meeting of the year amongst these two surging teams, however, both teams have split the last 6 games with the Mariners taking the last 3-game set at SafeCo Field on 7-24-2017.

Boston Red Sox's Latest Performance :

The Boston Red Sox come into this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 4-1.  Recently, the Red Sox would salvage a 4-game road set at Minute Maid Field versus the Houston Astros on 6-3-2018 by getting the series split due to a 9-3 win in the finale.  They would follow this series with a 3-game road series win versus the Detroit Tigers on 6-7-2018, yet, would lose their next series at home versus the Chicago White Sox on 6-10-2018.  They would, however, come out strong in their next series against the Baltimore Orioles to win the first 2 of a 3-game set, with game 2 being a 6-4 victory on 6-12-2018.

For the season, the Red Sox are averaging 5.13 runs per game (2nd) with a team batting average of .262 (1st), 97 homers (2nd), along with 50 stolen bases (2nd).  Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.46 (4th) with 668 strikeouts (2nd) along with 34 quality starts on the year (4th).

Mookie Betts (.354 BA on 189 AB), J.D. Martinez (.313 BA on 243 AB), Hanley Ramirez (.254 BA on 177 AB), Rafael Devers (.231 BA on 247 AB) and Andrew Benintendi (.297 BA on 249 AB) have all been consistent at the plate this year for the Red Sox and are their primary offensive leaders.  Eduardo Nunez (.249 BA on 229 AB) is also a key offensive component for Boston.

Chris Sale (5-4, 89 IP, 30 R, 64 H, 10 HR, 22 BB, 120 SO, 2.83 ERA), Rick Porcello (8-3, 86.1 IP, 39 R, 79 H, 7 HR, 20 BB, 80 SO, 3.54 ERA) and David Price (7-4, 74.1 IP, 36 R, 63 H, 7 HR, 30 BB, 72 SO, 4.00) have held it down for the Red Sox pitching staff all season.

Seattle Mariners's Latest Performance :

The Mariners have won 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4.  Recently, the Mariners would tie a short, 2-game road set against division foe Houston Astros on 6-6-2018.  In yet another series with the Rays, this time a 4-game road set, the Mariners came out in dominant fashion winning the series on 6-10-2018.  The Mariners would also go on to win the first 2 games of a 3-game home set versus the Los Angeles Angels.

For the season, the Mariners are averaging 4.40 runs per game (13th) with a team batting average of .259 (6th), 82 homers (9th) along with 44 stolen bases (5th).  Their pitching staff has certainly been inconsistent on the year with an ERA of 3.82 (13th) with 585 strikeouts (11th) along with 33 quality starts (6th).

Dee Gordon (.283 BA on 233 AB), Jean Segura (.342 BA on 269 AB), and Mitch Haniger (.267 BA on 243 AB) have been solid at the plate for the Mariners thus far.  Kyle Seager (.226 BA on 266 AB) has also been pivotal to Seattle’s success this season.

Mike Leake (7-3) has pitched 86.2 innings while allowing 43 runs on 90 hits, 12 homers, 20 walks, and 54 strikeouts with an ERA of 4.26 while James Paxton (6-1) has pitched 89.1 innings while allowing 30 runs on 65 hits, 9 homers, 25 walks, and 111 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.02 for the season.  Finally, Felix Hernandez (6-5) has pitched 77.1 innings this year while allowing 51 runs on 77 hits, 11 homers, 30 walks, and 64 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.70.

How Boston Red Sox & Seattle Mariners Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

For the season, the Red Sox are 37-31 ATS while the O/U is 32-34-2.  On the other hand, the Mariners are 35-32 ATS while the O/U is 35-31-1.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

James Paxton (6-1) will get the start in game 2 for the Mariners looking for his 6th win in 9 starts (and 3rd straight).  In his last outing, he pitched 7 innings while allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in a 5-4 road win versus the Tampa Bay Rays on 6-10-2018.  The over has been the play in 3 of his last 4 starts, yet, he has only been credited with 12 earned runs on 35 hits in his last 8 starts.  Paxton has had experience with much of the lineup for the Red Sox as Jackie Bradley, Jr. (.333 BA on 6 AB), Brock Holt (.400 BA on 5 AB), Sandy Leon (.333 BA on 3 AB), J.D. Martinez (.500 BA on 6 AB), Mitch Moreland (.250 BA on 4 AB), Eduardo Nunez (.500 BA on 2 AB), and Blake Swihart (1-3) have all had success against him.  Andrew Benintendi (0-3) and Christian Vazquez (0-2) have not had any success against the left-hander in their respective careers.

Totals Selection: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I am backing the over in this contest when I consider the success the Red Sox have had over Paxton in recent meetings.  This is not to say that the Red Sox will win as the Mariners are certainly a tough team to defeat at this point, however, I am quite sure that Boston will do everything in its power to exploit Paxton once again in which to get the all-important victory on Friday night.  Nonetheless, I can see the over being the result due to the fact that it has been the result in 7 of Paxton’s last 10 starts, overall.
